🥊Today’s #MenloMoment features the incredible story of Alumni Josh Emmett ‘10 (@joshemmettufc)
“I went down to Menlo in 2007 and graduated in 2010. I’m originally from Sacramento and I just felt like I needed to get out of there in order to get my degree and of course, I wanted to continue to wrestle.🤼♂️
At Menlo I met Keith Spataro who was the head coach at the time, and Joey Martinez who was assistant coach. I just enjoyed everything about Menlo. From it being such a small campus, to all the relationships and connections that I made over the three years that I was there, especially with the faculty and the staff, they were brilliant people.
Menlo was the first time I was out on my own, so it made me mature. I lived with my girlfriend at the time, who is now my wife.💙 I wrestled the second and third year I was there, because my whole plan all along was to pursue MMA. I was also training in Sacramento at one of the best gyms in the world for the lightweights.
At the end of the day, all I did paid off really well because I graduated, moved back home to pick up MMA training where I left off, and maybe a few months later I had my first amateur fight at 26 years old.
At Menlo I learned consistency, being disciplined, and following through on everything. It’s the same thing I did in my MMA career. I knew that ultimately I only wanted to fight for the best organization in the world. It was UFC or nothing.🥊
On Mother’s Day in 2016, I got into the UFC, making my debut on a five day notice across the world. Now I’ve been in the UFC for nine years, fought for world title, and was ranked in the top five or ten in the world.🥇
If I really sit and think from where we came from to where we’re at now, it’s almost surreal. And there’s still no end in sight.”
